The Interventional Centre
We are a Sydney interventional radiology practice offering non-surgical, image-guided treatment for enlarged prostate, knee osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal pain. Our focus is the middle ground so many people are never offered: real treatment for conditions where medication is no longer enough, but surgery feels like too big a step.
Treatment between medication and surgery
Interventional radiology treats conditions from inside the blood vessels, guided by advanced imaging, through a puncture no wider than a pinhole. There is no large incision and often no hospital stay. For the right patient it can ease symptoms that tablets no longer control, without committing to major surgery.
Minimally invasive
Procedures are performed through a small puncture at the wrist or groin, under local anaesthetic and light sedation, usually with same-day discharge.

Dr Mihir Desai

Dr Mihir Desai is a Vascular and Interventional Radiologist with consultant appointments at St George Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital.
After completing his medical degree at UNSW and specialist training at Prince of Wales Hospital, Dr Desai spent nearly three years training across some of the world’s leading interventional radiology centres. He began at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, one of Europe’s foremost centres for vascular and interventional radiology, developing expertise across vascular intervention and prostate artery embolisation. He then worked at the Royal Berkshire Hospital under Professor Mark Little, a global authority in genicular artery embolisation and prostate artery embolisation, before completing advanced training in hepatobiliary intervention and portal hypertension at the Royal Free London.
Dr Desai became the first Australian recipient of the CIRSE Fellowship Award, training under Professor Afshin Gangi at CHU Strasbourg, the first IASIOS Centre of Excellence for interventional oncology.
Returning to Guy’s and St Thomas’ as a Consultant, Dr Desai worked alongside Dr Sabharwal to set up the thyroid embolisation programme at Guy’s and St Thomas’, and to perform one of the first embolisations for thyroid multinodular goitre in the United Kingdom.
Dr Desai returned to Sydney to practise at St George alongside Dr Lodh and at Macquarie University Hospital, bringing techniques refined across leading centres in London and Europe to patients in Australia. He and Dr Lodh subsequently led the successful IASIOS accreditation of St George Hospital’s IR Service, making it the first public hospital in Australia to receive the designation. He is a Conjoint Lecturer in the Discipline of Surgery at UNSW, a Clinical Lecturer at Macquarie University, and an elected fellow of Academic Surgery at King’s Health Partners, London.
Dr Suhrid Lodh

Dr Suhrid Lodh is Head of Interventional Radiology and Deputy Chair of the Medical Staff Council at St George Hospital. He is a Conjoint Lecturer at UNSW and a Visiting Medical Officer at Hurstville Private and St George Private Hospitals. He consults patients at St George Hospital, Kogarah.
Dr Lodh established St George Hospital's Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE) program in 2016 and has performed the procedure for nearly a decade.
Dr Lodh founded the St George IR Clinic in 2016, establishing a clinical model for interventional radiology that has grown to see over 1,000 outpatients annually. He advocated for and led the creation of a dedicated Interventional Radiology Department, which now provides emergency and elective interventional procedures across a broad range of conditions, including advanced embolisation therapies, thrombectomy, ablation, percutaneous dialysis access, and damage control IR for critically unwell trauma patients.
Between 2021 and 2023, Dr Lodh designed and launched one of the world's first IR CT-Angio hybrid suites located within an operating theatre at St George Hospital, an innovative approach collaborating with the trauma service, giving critically unwell trauma patients access to assessment, resuscitation, imaging, and damage control intervention in a single location.
In 2026, under his leadership with Dr Desai, the St George IR Service became the first public hospital in Australia to receive IASIOS accreditation, recognising the department's global standing in interventional oncology.
Dr Lodh has contributed to peer-reviewed literature on the modernisation of interventional radiology services in Australia, chairs multiple tumour boards, and presents at national and international conferences on interventional radiology.
